The Big Sing
Join us for our largest annual singalong
Sat 29 June – 5.00 pm
PW1 Forecourt, Salamanca

From a humble ’round-the-fire singalong in 2005, the Festival of Voices’ preeminent event, The Big Sing, has flourished. As we proudly enter our 19th year, we reflect on how this annual gathering has solidified its place as Tasmania’s premier winter festival and Australia’s most notable singing festival. Join us on Saturday, 29th June 2024, where you’ll find us around the glow of fires, marking the opening of another year of celebration in song.
The Big Sing brings together a diverse array of local and interstate artists, fostering an inclusive haven for music enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. It’s a family-oriented event where you’re encouraged to rug up and brave the Tasmanian winter with food, drink, and warmed-up windpipes for our biggest yearly singalong. With a varied song selection, there’s something for everyone to join in, culminating in an informal ‘lesson’ led by local musician Jude Elliot and the well-known personality John X, ensuring all can participate in the final song of the night.
The Big Sing is a joyful occasion where community unites through the power of music. Open to all, there are no barriers to entry – no costs, no ticket registrations. Just bring yourself, your loved ones, warm clothes, and a willingness to join the chorus of voices. It’s a testament to the warmth that creativity and music bring, even amidst Tasmania’s winter chill. Festivities commence with a Welcome to Country at 5.00 pm, followed by artists celebrating the spirit of community, creativity, and the transformative power of song.

This choir was established as part of a departmental wellbeing initiative whereby the word ‘wellbeing’ was rebranded to ‘CRAG”…Celebrating Resilience and Grit! It was thought that ‘CRAG’ more accurately reflected the day-to-day challenges and reinvigorated the appetite for staff to have some fun away from the workplace. The choir comprises people working across critical care services in Hobart, including Ambulance Tasmania paramedics, Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency doctors and nurses, as well as aids, clerks, orderlies and all those making up the patchwork of staff involved in emergency care.
Like many, the last few years have been particularly challenging for emergency department staff and paramedics. An opportunity was provided by the Festival of Voices corporate choir challenge last year to have some fun and rekindle that sense of belonging and connection with colleagues and community. ‘Medising’ was prescribed! The powerful tonic of singing together, laughs and banter made the Festival Of Voices challenge incredibly fulfilling and a therapeutic medicine. Medising were thrilled to take out both the Audience Favourite Award and the Judges Overall Best Choir Award.
Following such an uplifting beginning their choir is continuing with weekly rehearsals and performances throughout Hobart.
Since inception, JESSA has become a significant force in Tasmanian choral music, performing a minimum of five concerts annually, including their own subscription series, and appearances at Festival of Voices. Modern repertoire is very much their focus, with presentation of leading contemporary English, American, Scandinavian and Baltic State composers. Importantly, JESSA champions Australian composers, and has a commitment to Tasmanian works, having already presented numerous SSA compositions by expat Ben Van Tienen.
JESSA is currently involved in discussions with leading composers including Sally Whitwell, Joseph Twist, Andrew Ford and Angus Davison, and look forward to presenting their works in future concerts.
