Montaigne

The Sydney-based artist's journey, transitioning from a young indie musician to one of Australia's most distinctive and dynamic voices, is remarkable.

A natural storyteller and entertainer, the multi-talented Montaigne has always succeeded in delivering unique artistry. The Sydney-based artist's journey, transitioning from a young indie musician to one of Australia's most distinctive and dynamic voices, is remarkable.

Since 2012, Montaigne has been courting attention with their music, demonstrating songwriting intelligence, nuance and sensitivity. With early releases 'I Am Not An End' and 'I'm A Fantastic Wreck' heralding their entry into the Australian music industry properly in 2014, Montaigne's foundations in building a legacy were laid strong.

Fast becoming a triple j favourite, not to mention an in-demand performer following the release of EP THE LIFE OF MONTAIGNE (2014) and then debut album GLORIOUS HEIGHTS (2016).

Fans and industry professionals had the opportunity to witness Montaigne's growth as a musician and performer on national stages, becoming integral parts of her artistic journey. The release of 'GLORIOUS HEIGHTS,' featuring the ARIA Platinum-certified single 'Because I Love You,' brought Montaigne's music to a wider audience and earned them critical acclaim. The album reached #4 on the ARIA Chart, secured the #25 spot on triple j's Hottest 100 countdown, and garnered the 'Best Breakthrough Artist' award at the 2016 ARIA Awards. Additionally, it received a nomination for 'Australian Album Of The Year' at the J Awards ceremony the same year. While their solo success took to new heights, Montaigne also lent their voice to one of the Hilltop Hoods' most popular releases, '1955', a record now certified 8x Platinum.

2019 saw the arrival of their sophomore album, a collection of observations and stories beautifully delivered against a backdrop of sprawling and theatrical sounds, fittingly titled COMPLEX. A touchstone record for Montaigne, the album represented the artist who had been powering ahead in carving out their own lane in Australian music - bold and undeterred. The album explores various themes, including loneliness, isolation, distorted love stories, self-identity, the desire for escape, self-image challenges, and self-discovery.

2020 brought another pivotal moment for Montaigne, as they were selected to represent Australia at Eurovision in Rotterdam 2020, having won the Eurovision: Australia Decides competition with the original song, 'Don't Break Me'. Like their predecessor Kate Miller-Heidke, sharp songwriting talent and performance style made them the perfect candidate to represent Australia at the iconic competition. While the global music event was delayed due to the pandemic, Montaigne returned in 2021 to represent Australia on the world stage in a live broadcast to Rotterdam in May of 2021 with their single 'Technicolour'.

With the release of their third album, 'making it!', Montaigne ventured into a new era of music. This futuristic album saw the Australian pop maverick collaborating with one of the world's most celebrated and influential artists, David Byrne (of Talking Heads), on the single 'Always Be You'. Each music release introduces the audience to another facet of Montaigne's kaleidoscopic musicality. With more to come, it's clear there's no stopping the powerhouse that is Montaigne.

With melodies to get lost in and the most energetic of live performances - Montaigne represents the next generation of artists who march to the beat of their own drum.
