Mozart: Great Mass in C minor
Guest conductor: Dr Elizabeth Scott
with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra
Major Choral Concert: Sunday 30 June, 2.00pm, Federation Concert Hall
The powerful Great Mass in C minor reveals Mozart at his peak. A work of mysterious origins, the Great Mass is a complex masterpiece. Its mood shifts constantly – sometimes dazzling, sometimes movingly sombre. The six movements of this work embody the Salzburg traditions of the era, demonstrating Mozart’s influence of Bach and Handel, whose music he was studying at the time. The Great Mass stands alongside his Requiem as one of the most remarkable of church compositions.
There remains an aura of mystery about the completion of the Great Mass following Mozart’s death. Widely programmed around the world today, it was first performed in St Peter’s Church, Salzburg, in 1783 with Constance, Mozart’s wife, as one of the soprano soloists.
In 2024, participating singers will be offered two options for rehearsals:
- Group A for those who need to keep their weekdays free
- Group B for those who are happy to rehearse during the day
When you register, you will be directed to a form where you can nominate which rehearsal option is your preference.
What's included?
This fee will cover the cost of your vocal score (valued at $50 – non-refundable), festival accreditation, light refreshments, the chance to network with like-minded choristers, and specially negotiated accommodation rates.
