Festival of Voices

    Steve Clarke

    Choral director (NSW)

Steve is one of Sydney’s most versatile choral directors. He started his career as a high school strings and vocal tutor then spent several years writing and recording music for NIDA, The Performance Space and various shady rock ’n’ roll producers. He sharpened his a cappella skills by directing and coaching barbershop choruses and quartets across Australia.

He had his first taste of gospel music as a member of The Honeybees with Tony Backhouse in 1999 and fell in love with the genre. After singing with the Cafe of the Gate of Salvation and Flat White, Steve went on to direct the a cappella groups Rising C Levels, The Sea Naturals and The Stairwell to Heaven, before becoming the Honeybees Musical Director in 2010.

In 2024 he led the Bees on a tour to the heart of Australia to perform at the Alice Springs Desert Song Festival, and 2026 marks the choir’s 30th birthday year.

Steve also runs regular Soul Sing workshops in Balmain, Sydney, where singers can enjoy accessible, community-based singing, connect with others, and share a beer over a relaxed pub dinner.

Steve looks forward to introducing the Honeybees’ warmth, energy and spirit to Hobart audiences at the Festival of Voices.
