Singcognito
A cappella choir (TAS)
Nestled in the heart of Launceston, Tasmania, Singcognito has been filling the air with the joy of unaccompanied voices since 2001. Founded under the passionate and dedicated leadership of Sarah Stagg, the choir quickly established itself as a cherished part of the local musical landscape, bringing people together through the shared love of song.
In 2014, the baton was passed to the talented Elaine Yates, who embraced and expanded upon the foundations Sarah had so carefully built. Under Elaine’s warm and inspiring direction, Singcognito continued to flourish — deepening its roots in the community and touching the hearts of audiences and members alike. Her sudden and untimely passing in late 2025 left a profound void, not only in the choir but in the wider community that had come to love her. Her legacy, however, lives on in every note Singcognito sings.
The choir’s journey now continues under the direction of Tara Falconer, who carries forward the spirit and vision of both Sarah and Elaine with great care and dedication. Under Tara’s guidance, Singcognito honours its rich history while looking with hope and harmony toward the future.
What makes Singcognito truly distinctive is its wonderfully eclectic repertoire — spanning from the intricate beauty of Renaissance madrigals, African music to the beloved pop anthems of the 1960s and 70s. There is something in the choir’s songbook for everyone, performed with enthusiasm, warmth, and a distinctly human touch.
At its heart, Singcognito is not simply a choir — it is a community. There are no auditions, no barriers to entry, and no expectation of perfection. Singers of all abilities are welcomed with open arms, because the belief here is simple: everyone deserves to sing. The bonds forged in rehearsal rooms and on stage have made Singcognito something far greater than the sum of its parts — it is, quite simply, a family.
