    Jack Machin

    Musician, educator & MC (TAS)

    Jack Machin has worked as a professional musician, teacher and conductor for the past 25 years, enjoying a variety of performance and teaching opportunities. Throughout this time Jack has performed with the Tasmanian, Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.  

    During 2003 to 2009 Jack served as Principal Trombone for the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and performed and toured with Opera Australia and the Griffin Ensemble, performed lead roles in productions of Cats and Thoroughly Modern Millie and held the position of trombone teacher at the ANU School of Music.  

    Jack has conducted a number of youth and adult ensembles and previously held the position of conductor and Director of Bands for Canberra Youth Orchestra Society, Director of the Rugby Men’s Choir, Director of the Young Music Society Summer School and more school bands and choirs than he can remember.  In 2012, Jack founded the Newcastle Youth Orchestra where he served as Artistic Director and Chief conductor for 5 years before taking a place on the board for a further three years.  

    Since moving to Hobart in 2020, Jack has been privileged to work with many young local musicians and was the Director of Music at St Virgil’s College. Jack is the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s Head of Learning & Community Projectsa role that sees him teaching around the state, delivering professional learning and resources to Tasmanian school teachers and conducting and presenting the TSO’s highly acclaimed Schools Concerts.  

    Jack has been a featured conductor at the Festival of Voices’ Young Tasmania Sings programming through his ongoing involvement with the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, where he is the resident conductor for the TYO Chamber Orchestra.
