    Gospella

    A cappella choir (TAS)

Gospella is a vibrant a cappella choir based in Launceston, Tasmania, bringing together voices from all walks of life in a shared celebration of gospel and spiritual music. Founded in early 2021 by the late Elaine Yates, the choir was the realisation of a lifelong dream — one that Elaine finally pursued upon her retirement in 2020.

Elaine had long envisioned a choir where the joy of singing took centre stage: a place with no auditions, no barriers, and no prerequisites beyond a willingness to show up and sing. That vision became Gospella. From its earliest days, the choir welcomed anyone and everyone, regardless of musical background or experience, and quickly grew to a community of over 60 voices strong.

The repertoire draws deeply from the rich traditions of gospel and spiritual music, featuring arrangements by acclaimed vocal director Tony Backhouse as well as originals crafted by Elaine herself. Songs span a wide range of styles, including African spirituals and traditional gospel, reflecting both the diversity and depth of the genre.

What sets Gospella apart is not only its music, but the warmth and belonging it fosters. Elaine built something rare — a choir that feels like family. Members come together not just to rehearse, but to connect, support one another, and share in the uplifting power of communal song.

Tragically, Elaine Yates passed away in late 2025, leaving behind a community that she had shaped with love, dedication, and an irrepressible spirit. In her memory, choir director Heidi Komzak has stepped forward to lead Gospella, ensuring that Elaine’s dream continues to thrive and her legacy lives on in every note sung.

Gospella stands as a testament to what one person’s passion can create — a chorus of voices, a community of hearts, and a dream that sings on.
