Festival of Voices

    Gospel Groove

Rhythm, harmony, and a whole lotta soul!

Immerse yourself in the uplifting world of a cappella Gospel singing in this dynamic two-hour workshop led by popular Sydney choir director Steve Clarke, and joined by members of his choir, The Honeybees. Together, you’ll learn three inspiring Gospel songs by ear, honouring the rich oral tradition and infectious spirit at the heart of the genre.

Expect plenty of joyful singing and movement, with simple body percussion, soaring four-part harmony, and the irresistible call-and-response style that captures the essence of Gospel music.

Along the way, Steve will also share insights into the powerful role Gospel music played during the American Civil Rights Movement, adding depth and context to this vibrant musical tradition.

No prior singing experience is needed — just bring your enthusiasm, jump into the group, and feel the groove of Gospel singing!

    Who should register?

Anyone with a love of singing, movement, or just curiosity to try something new should join this workshop.  No prior experience is needed, so this workshop is perfect for beginners, experienced singers, choir members or anyone who wants to feel the joy, energy and spirit of Gospel music.  Everyone is welcome; bring along your enthusiasm, your voice and your sense of fun!

    Why participate?

Experience the joy of singing in a group, connect with other music lovers, and discover the infectious energy of Gospel music firsthand.  You’ll leave with new skills, a few inspiring songs in your pocket, and a full heart from sharing in the rhythm, harmony and soul of this vibrant tradition.

    Our pricing model

As a non-profit, we prioritise bringing singing and music to our communities, not maximising income. We work to make our ticket prices as affordable as possible, and we’ve shifted to an early bird pricing model instead of concession pricing. This change focuses on equity, allowing everyone to secure tickets at a reduced price and helping us keep the festival accessible to as many people as possible.

Each event will have a set number of tickets available at the early bird price. Once these are sold, standard prices will apply. This ensures we can cover event costs while keeping the festival sustainable and maintaining affordable options for our audiences.

Steve Clarke led an engaging, well-paced Gospel Groove workshop, teaching us the songs and parts with ease and humour in four-part harmony. We learned about the roots of Gospel music and the importance of Gospel songs in the Civil Rights Movement. I really enjoyed moving and clapping along with the whole group, the opportunity for vocal improvisation and the feeling of genuine joy
