    Salama

    Creole Music & Dance Ensemble

Salama is a dynamic music and dance ensemble that brings the powerful rhythms and stories of the Indian Ocean to life. Founded by Dr. Muriel Hillion-Toulcanon, Salama celebrates the vibrant traditions of Maloya and Sega, blending the ancestral sounds of Réunion Island with contemporary influences. Through their electrifying performances, the group embodies resilience, cultural heritage, and the spirit of Creole identity.

Salama’s music is deeply rooted in the rhythmic heartbeat of Maloya, featuring the rolling bass of the roulèr, the evocative shake of the kayamb, and the sharp percussive accents of the sati/pikèr. Their performances combine soulful vocals, infectious grooves, and expressive movement, creating an immersive experience that transcends borders and generations.

More than just a band, Salama is a movement—sharing the joy, struggle, and strength of Creole culture through music, storytelling, and dance. Whether on festival stages, in community workshops, or intimate gatherings, they invite audiences to connect, feel, and move. Salama’s work is a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Maloya, carried forward with passion, authenticity, and innovation.
