If you love the idea of a workshop but can’t quite manage the time, why not participate in our shorter Choral Experiences?  Carefully curated to appeal to a wide range of interests – whether you want to learn new techniques and skills, explore new styles of music, upskill your conducting, or want to have a simply satisfyingly sing, there is something for everyone!

2 July: Find the YOU in your Singing with Kath Williams

Work with Kath to bring a new level of understanding of your own voice and how it works. Find the YOU in your singing to create ease, freedom and enjoyment through some great techniques and tools you will take away to use at Festival of Voices and beyond!  

As a self-confessed vocal pedagogy nerd and ever curious lifelong learner, voice teacher Kath Williams loves to create life changing experiences for all levels of singers through sharing her passion, knowledge and wisdom gained through studying extensively, and 30 + years as a singer, musician, and performer, via discovery exploration and curiosity.

2 July: Song Sound Silence: Singing for Wellbeing with Janet Swain

Big Song Sessions combine beautiful simple songs with exercises from several healing modalities – tapping, xi gong, chant, sound work, laughter yoga and meditation – to create a one-hour experience that is incredibly uplifting and joyful.  

“Janet’s joyfulness is contagious! Singing in a circle, the body exercises, the expression takes you out of yourself so that you become more courageous, singing can do that and Janet shows us how. She has all these techniques at her fingertips. A skilled and beautiful teacher. “ 

Janet Swain is a singer, teacher, performer and songwriter. She has founded and directed many community choirs in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Singapore and the Byron Shire, and she has developed a dynamic and original teaching style. 

These days Janet lives in the beautiful Byron Shire in northern NSW, and her current projects include Big Song Sessions, Dynasty8 Chamber Choir, music comedy ensemble The Loveys, and she teaches privately and in local primary schools. She has an honours degree in music and education.

3 July: Songwriting Retreat with Paul Jarman

Explore the ways you can delve into the world of  songwriting as you enjoy this opportunity to be mentored by Paul Jarman in an intimate creative workshop.  Be inspired by the beautiful surroundings of kunanyi /Mount Wellington as you create and share stories and songs.  

Paul Jarman is a frequent guest to the Festival of Voices as a composer, conductor, clinician, presenter and MC extraordinaire!  Over the years, the festival has commissioned and premiered several works written or co-written by Paul. He has touched the lives of thousands of festival goers with his boundless and infectious joy and enthusiasm for all things choral music.

4 July: Harmonise With Hobart Harmony, led by Jenni Pyefinch

Sing a mix of female barbershop and modern A Cappella music in four-part harmony. No music reading experience is necessary, just come along and have a good supportive sing with both experienced and novice singers’ side by side.

Hobart Harmony is a women’s chorus committed to the art of a cappella performance. Hobart Harmony is proud to be Tasmania’s only Sweet Adelines chorus, part of an international organisation of female singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition, and performance.

6 July: Harmonise With Deep South, led by Kieran Slicer

Sing a mix of male barbershop and modern a cappella music in four-part harmony. No music reading experience is necessary, just come along and have a good supportive sing with both experienced and novice singers’ side by side.  

Deep South Chorus, Tasmania’s premier close harmony men’s chorus – three times Australia’s best small barbershop chorus. Their repertoire includes lively up tunes through to emotional ballads.

8 July: Tibetan Singing with Tenzin Choegyal

Spend some time with outstanding Tibetan composer/ performer Tenzin Choegyal in this thoroughly enjoyable workshop.  

Drawing on his nomadic heritage Tenzin shares his knowledge of Tibetan folk song and the nomadic style of vocal projection which is unique to his musical lineage. Tenzin will also share the practice of mantra singing. Derived from two Sanskrit words, manas (mind) and tra (tool or vehicle), mantras are considered to be powerful “tools of thought” – a means of harnessing and focusing the mind.  

In this workshop Tenzin leads participants on a musical journey from the joyous to the contemplative. Come along prepared to sing your heart out!

9 July: Choral Show Songs with Di O’Toole

Enjoy a spirited sing through some much-loved choruses of Bernstein, Gershwin, and Gilbert and Sullivan.  Amanda Hodder will join you on the piano. 

Di first joined a choir at age 11 and has been involved with choirs ever since. In retirement, she sings with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Hobart-based chamber choir Allegri Ensemble, and conducts the 60-strong community choir Cygnet Singers.

9 July: Song Circles with Melissa Kenny

Join in the song circles and become uplifted while singing song circles of varying styles and moods. Unencumbered by printed music or lyrics, participants can have a go at improvisation and vocal percussion for those who would like the extra challenge!  

Feel uplifted after a fun-filled session creating harmonies and improvising together as you sing your heart out! You will be moved afresh by the amazing power and breadth of human voices joined in song. 

Melissa is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, teacher and conductor based in Sydney with a background in composition and jazz. She has over 30 years’ experience directing and teaching singers and musicians of various ages and backgrounds and is the founder and artistic director of Soulfood a Cappella and music director of Sydney Voices. She conducts for Hummingsong Choirs, Scots College and Epping Boys High School and teaches voice from her home studio.
